OpenSuSE on HP dv7-1010ed part 4
Well, since my last post on this subject things have developed:
Of course there was OpenSuSE 11.3. I expected much but i got a lot of problems. First the upgrade installer damaged my bootloader install. Then I discovered that the OpenSuSE install DVD no longer has an repair option. so I had to repair Grub manually.
And OpenSuSE no longer has SAX2 which means there's no graphic configuration anymore in OpenSuSE. And ATI didn't have drivers for the new version when it came out. So I had to unpack and hack the code of the driver download from the ATI site which is not really friendly for inexperienced Linux users.
Anyways, I got it working and after all it's not that bad.
In my former post about this subject i wrote about problems with the sound card. But that's the nice thing about Linux contrary to Windows: The older the computer, the better Linux gets.
While HP after 2 years simply stops with delivering updates for Windows driver for their hardware, are the most sound problems I had solved in Linux.
Since then I have got some more hardware working:
First the, quite useless remote, which came with the laptop. Using the lirc serial driver and some 'learning' I got it working.
Then the Nokia internet tethering: Using blueman i can now connect to the phone using bluetooth and so I have mobile internet, without any cable. Providers don't like this because a PC/laptop downloads a lot more data then a mobile phone. But in my opinion this is only true for Windows which automatically (and unwanted) starts to download all sorts of updates as soon as an internet-connection is available. I wouldn't do any updates or downloads on a 735kbits line for my pleasure, but I also don't want to spend €25/month for a full mobile internet for the rare occasion that I use mobile internet.
I also got mythtv working: On my main PC with TV-card the backend is running (using the dutch KPN Digitenne DVB broadcast, my TV-card is connected to the receiver). Since I'm often in the kitchen for smoking, I can watch TV on my laptop.
